The main activity of the Institute for Advanced Studies of Nantes lies in assembling annual cohorts of about a dozen selected researchers chosen for the quality and originality of their work. Each year, artists (musicians, visual artists, writers, filmmakers, etc.) are also invited to stay within the cohort thanks to the Institute’s relationships with other local institutions: Beaux-Arts Nantes Saint-NazaireLe Lieu Unique, the Maison de la Poésie in Nantes, and the Maison Julien Gracq.

Various types of applications are possible for a stay at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Nantes. All of these residency proposals contribute to forming the annual cohort (between October 1st and June 30th). They are presented below.

You can find the major scientific orientations of the Institute here. To stay informed about the dates of various calls for applications, remember to subscribe to the Institute’s newsletter.

Classic Fellowship

This call for applications is open to researchers who wish to temporarily leave their country, institution, and disciplinary framework to pursue an ambitious project. The Institute for Advanced Studies of Nantes does not exclude any field of research or academic discipline.

The duration of a residency is 9 months, from early October to late June.
Between 5 and 7 residencies are offered per year.

The call for applications for a residency in 2025-2026 is open from March 15, 2024, to May 15, 2024 at our platform.

How to apply?

To apply, you must submit your application on the platform tailored to the chair you are applying for. A form will need to be completed, and documents will need to be uploaded online.

Applications for the "Classical," "France-ILO," and the upcoming new Chair are to be submitted online through the Institute’s platform. You will find a guide to assist you in submitting your application. Please note that initially, if needed, applicants must create an account that will be validated by the admissions service within 48 hours. Once their account is validated, applicants can submit their application online in multiple steps.

Please note that any residency agreement now includes adherence to an ethical charter on inclusion, diversity, and respect, which has been in effect at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Nantes since 2023.

Admission Process

The admission process consists of several steps:

(i) Once applications are received, a first stage of examination and scientific selection of applications takes place. This stage can extend over several months.

(ii) After selection, candidates are informed by email of the results. Three statuses are then communicated:

  • Retained on the main list;
  • Retained on the waiting list;
  • Not retained.

(iii) In case of acceptance, the candidate must confirm their interest in the residency.

(iv) After confirming interest, the Institute contacts them to reach an agreement on the legal, administrative, and financial conditions of their stay. More information here.

(v) Finally, once the agreement is signed, preparation for arrival regarding logistical and scientific aspects is arranged until arrival in Nantes for the start of the residency.
