The Carlsberg Foundation supports excellent basic research at the highest international level in the fields of natural science, social science and the humanities, carried out by Danish researchers and foreign researchers with a pre-established connection to Danish research environments.

The Carlsberg Foundation gives high priority to groundbreaking new developments in Danish research as well as internationalisation of research talents and succession planning in Danish research. During the evaluation, the foundation will generally prioritise a holistic assessment of the individual applicant as well as visionary research projects with a high potential for scientific breakthroughs.

The Carlsberg Foundation offers the following types of grants:

Carlsberg Foundation Internationalisation Fellowships

Postdoctoral grants for outstanding PhDs for a 12-month stay at a leading international research institution.

Carlsberg Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships in Denmark

Postdoctoral grants for outstanding PhDs to establish independent research activities in Denmark.

Carlsberg Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Danish Institute at Athens

One postdoctoral grant for a three-year stay at the Danish Institute at Athens for research within archaeology, history, languages, literature, visual art, architecture, and cultural traditions in Greece and the Mediterranean countries.

Crown Prince Frederik Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Greenland or the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources

One two-year postdoctoral fellowship in honour of Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th birthday. The project should focus specifically on subjects related to Greenland. The fellowship will be hosted at the University of Greenland or the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources.

HM Queen Margrethe II Distinguished Research Project on the Danish-Icelandic reception of Nordic antiquity

Two two-year postdoctoral fellowships in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Iceland's independence. The project should focus specifically on the subject of the Danish-Icelandic reception of Nordic antiquity from the Renaissance to national romanticism and modernism. The project will be hosted at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in collaboration with the National Museum of Iceland and the University of Iceland.

Carlsberg Foundation Distinguished Fellowships

Grants for outstanding newly appointed associate professors or tenure-track assistant professors with international experience to establish an independent research group or environment, including the acquisition of research infrastructure (equipment, register data, etc.) and the formation of national/international networks.

Carlsberg Foundation 'Semper Ardens' Monographs

Up to eight one-year fellowships for leading established researchers with a 'Semper Ardens' (passionate, always burning) approach to their research and with a project aimed at producing a ground-breaking monograph or doctoral dissertation.

Research Infrastructure

Grants for equipment, register data or similar.

Field Trips / Research Stays at Foreign Institutions

Grants for field trips or research stays at leading international research institutions.  

Publication

Grants for the publication of monographs based on research supported by the Carlsberg Foundation.

Conferences

Grants for arranging international conferences in Denmark.

Expressions of interest: Carlsberg Foundation 'Semper Ardens' Research Projects

The Carlsberg Foundation also invites expressions of interest for a small number of visionary 'Semper Ardens' research projects aimed at cross-scientific breakthroughs and/or high-risk/high-gain research. The main applicant must be an internationally recognized professor with a passionate ('Semper Ardens') approach to research.

The Carlsberg Foundation does not support:

  • Clinical and technical research
  • Non-scientific staff
  • Overhead costs
