Senior Fellowships
IFK_Senior Fellowships are intended for outstanding researchers who are advanced in their academic careers, and want to pursue their own research at the IFK while fostering intellectual cooperation with the IFK_Fellows and other Austrian colleagues. Qualified applications for this fellowship will be accepted from individuals of all nationalities and regardless of institutional or professional affiliation. Applicants with an international reputation and a publication profile that identifies them as leading experts in their respective scientific fields are particularly encouraged to apply.
Duration and funding
Senior Fellowships are awarded for an academic semester (October 1–January 31, or March 1–June 30). IFK_Senior Fellowships include an expense allowance of max. € 2,325 monthly (€ 75 / day) as well as a workstation at the IFK with computer and internet access. Fellows that are not residents of Vienna will be supplied with one-time round-trip travel to and from Vienna and accommodation in a 35 m2 apartment. Fellows are responsible for their own health insurance and social security.
Research Fellowships
IFK_Research Fellowships are intended for postdoctoral researchers. Qualified applications can be submitted regardless of the nationality and institutional or professional affiliation of the applicant. Austrian applicants with comparable qualifications are given preference.
Duration and funding:
Research fellowships are awarded for an academic semester (1 October to 31 January or 1 March to 30 June). IFK_Research Fellowships include an expense allowance of max. €2,325 monthly (€ 75 / day) as well as a workspace at the IFK with EDP and internet access. For Fellows with a proper residence outside Vienna, the one-off arrival and departure costs to and from Vienna and free accommodation in a 35 m2 apartment for one person are covered. Costs for health and social insurance are not covered by the IFK.
General Criteria of Evaluation
A thematic link to the IFK’s current research focus on “Kulturen des Übersetzens / Cultures of Translation” is desired but not a prerequisite for application. The IFK will also accept “independent“ projects within the realm of humanities and social sciences unrelated to the present research focus.
Applications may be submitted either in German or English.
Applications will be peer-reviewed by the IFK's International Academic Advisory Board. A final decision will be taken in regard to the requirements of the yearly scholarly program. The Board looks for four essential features in fellowship proposals:
- a well-defined and innovative research question
- a clear definition of the uniqueness of the work and/or the significance of the research to important theoretical and methodological issues in interdisciplinary culture studies and humanities
- a discussion of the work in the context of appropriate research done by international scholars
- clear methodological provisions that guarantee an interdisciplinary research focus
The IFK discourages proposals that are either exclusively theoretical or exclusively empirical in character. It supports projects that combine empirical investigation with thoughtful theoretical work. Research proposals that present a clearly formulated problem, demonstrate familiarity with the scholarly field(s), and develop an inter-disciplinary methodological framework stand the best chance of approval by the International Academic Advisory Board.
The recent application round is for the academic year 2020/21.
