Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia accepts applications for Postdoctoral Fellowships in the following colloquies:

  • Culture and Democracy
  • Culture and Formation
  • Religion and Late Modernity
  • Picturing the Human
  • Knowledge, Technology & Culture
  • Culture, Capitalism & Global Change

The fellowships are for a full academic year and are renewable for up to a total of three years, depending on performance and availability of funding. The fellowship carries an annual stipend of $40,000 plus individual health insurance and office space at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture.

Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of how well their current scholarship both reflects and advances the intellectual mission of Institute in general and the specific colloquies listed above. Fellowships are open to all qualified candidates without restriction as to citizenship, though all Fellows must be in residence at UVa for the duration of the award period and may not hold other forms of employment. Institute Fellows are expected to participate in all Institute-sponsored events and to be an active member of their colloquy.

Applicants for the Postdoctoral Fellowships must have been awarded their PhD by the start of the fellowship. Postdoctoral applicants must have been awarded their PhD no earlier than 2016.

Applicants must submit a project abstract, including title (not to exceed 50 words) as a well as a project description, not to exceed seven double-spaced pages (1,750 words). It must indicate the nature of the research to be completed during the period of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship award, its relevance to the intellectual mission of the Institute and the colloquy, and general academic significance. The project description must include a detailed plan of research and revision as well as concrete objectives to be achieved during award period. These objectives must include a publication plan for the proposed research and writing. Project abstract and description must be attached through Jobs@UVA as Writing Sample 1.

Applicants should attach a cover letter of application (250-word maximum) indicating which colloquies they would like to be considered under; a curriculum vitae that include date(s) and location(s) of degree(s) earned, honors and awards, lectures and conference presentations, and publications; and the contact information for three references.

In addition, please arrange to have two confidential letters of reference (signed originals only) sent directly to the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture by persons qualified to evaluate the proposals for which support is being sought. They may be written by the references listed above.
