Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Digital Humanities at University of Virginia Law Library

The University of Virginia Law Library invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Digital Humanities beginning August 8, 2016 and ending June 30, 2017. This position is renewable for up to two years and offers compensation of $50,000 plus health insurance. The successful candidate will contribute to the digital humanities efforts at the University of Virginia Law School and pursue his/her independent research.

Candidates must have sound familiarity with archival methods, digital collections management, website development, and historical research. The Fellow will work primarily with materials housed within the Law Library's Special Collections, targeting items for digitization while conceptualizing and developing web-based digital exhibitions. These exhibitions will be engaging and focused projects with special attention to cultural, legal, and political frameworks. In addition, the Fellow will attend relevant library and technology conferences with the expectation he/she will develop workshops and presentations for showcasing the library's digital humanities efforts to the wider scholarly community.

The Fellow will assist with managing the expansion of the Law Library's Scottish Court of Session Records digitization project and providing historical interpretation of the collection, developing interfaces and tools for accessing the documents, and implementing computational approaches to interpreting and disseminating data derived from the digital collection.

Experience with digital humanities approaches such as geospatial and temporal data visualization, text-mining, and open-access data practices, alongside expertise in Early Modern Scottish, Atlantic, or legal history is preferred. Publications based on research derived from these materials will be strongly encouraged.

This position is open to all qualified candidates without restriction as to citizenship or current residence, though all Fellows must be in residence in Charlottesville for the duration of the award period. Applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. (or furnish proof of a successfully defended dissertation) in history, law or humanities by the time of appointment. Post-doctoral applicants must have been awarded a Ph.D. no earlier than 2013.

A review of applications will begin on June 11, 2016; however, the position will remain open until filled.

The University of Virginia is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Women, minorities, veterans and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
