Promoting mental health and well-being in the young

Mental well-being[1] is integral to population health and well-being and contributes to the functioning of individuals, families, communities and the social and economic prosperity of society. Mental and behavioural disorders including addictive behaviour place immense burdens on individuals, families and society; they also increase the risk of co-morbidities and social exclusion. Childhood and adolescence are crucial periods for laying the foundations for healthy development and mental well-being.

New therapies for rare diseases

Rare diseases are diseases which affect not more than 5 per 10 000 persons in the European Union, as defined in the context of the EU legislation. A considerable amount of knowledge has been generated by biomedical research in recent years, yet most of the 6 000 to 8 000 rare diseases are lacking therapies despite many of these diseases being life-threatening or chronically debilitating.
