Estelle Freedman Award
The Estelle Freedman Award is a research travel award given out by the CLGBTH for scholars applying feminist analysis to LBGTQ history, from any historical time period or region. The award is named in honor of Estelle Freedman, a pathbreaking historian in US women’s history and feminist studies. Professor Freedman taught at Stanford from 1976 to 2021, where she cofounded the Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Her prolific scholarship includes prison reform, lesbian history, and the politics of sexuality.
Applications for the research travel award should be sent as one PDF file via email by 11:59pm (Pacific time), November 1, 2023 to all members of the award committee. Questions can be addressed to award committee chair, Annelise Heinz.
Anyone is welcome to apply for the Estelle Freedman Award, but we will give priority to graduate students and early career scholars with the greatest financial need.

Applications should include the following in a single PDF document addressed to all award committee members:
- Contact information (name, email, phone, and address)
- Institutional affiliation (if any)
- Written summary (no more than 750 words) of research objectives, methodology, significance, and alignment with feminist analysis in LBGTQ history.
- A brief and informal budget, providing an overview of the projected travel and research expenses and prospective travel dates. Applicants may ask for up to $1,000.
- For graduate students and early career scholars, briefly explain your financial need in a short statement following your budget (optional)

The Estelle Freedman Award Committee will announce the grant recipient(s) no later than January 2024.
