NACBS-Gale Digital Scholar Lab Fellowships

Gale and NACBS seek applications for 5 Gale-NACBS Non-Residential Fellowships, which will support research or teaching projects that rely on Gale Primary Sources, including those held in Gale’s British Library Newspapers series and Decolonization collection, and use digital humanities methodologies.

Gale and NACBS seek applications for 5 Gale-NACBS Non-Residential Fellowships, which will support research or teaching projects that rely on Gale Primary Sources, including those held in Gale’s British Library Newspapers series and Decolonization collection, and use digital humanities methodologies. Along with these select Gale Primary Sources, awarded fellows will be given access to Gale Digital Scholar Lab for the duration of their fellowship. Proposals with a focus on migration, decolonization and/or diaspora studies are welcome, but applicants must make clear how they will use digital methods and the corpus of materials in Gale Primary Sources to further their research and teaching.  For questions relating to the Gale Digital Scholar Lab and eligible digital humanities proposals, please contact Chris Houghton, (chris.houghton@cengage.com), Head of Academic Partnerships at Gale.

Each fellowship of $2,500 will support the equivalent of one-month’s full-time work (160 hours). Awardees may dedicate four consecutive weeks to the fellowship project, or they may spread their work out over a longer period.  Applicants from all countries are eligible to apply for the fellowship. Eligible applicants must be members of NACBS, and be either doctoral students or PhDs. (US-based doctoral students must have passed their comprehensive exams and hold ABD status.) Fellowships will be awarded by July 15 and must be completed by January 15, 2024. A 2-3 page report on how they've used Gale's resources to further their research projects will be due on February 15, 2024. Awardees will be expected to attend the November 2023 NACBS conference in Baltimore to present on the initial findings of their research. Additional funding will be available from Gale to facilitate conference attendance.

Gale will host a virtual information session at which they can share with potential applicants more details on the functionality of Gale Digital Scholar Lab. The date for this session is TBD. Check back for more details.

Application details

Applicants can apply for the fellowship here. The application should include a CV and a 500-word research proposal. The proposal and CV should be combined into one document and uploaded as a PDF. The proposal should clearly outline the proposed research question and digital humanities methodology.
