Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate at the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy (MCTD). The successful candidate will pursue high-quality research at the intersection of digital issues in humanitarian action. These could include a focus on cybersecurity, law, policy, or human rights. The successful candidate will work independently at the intersection of research and application, working to further knowledge in this area, identifying new challenges as they emerge and developing guidance and learning opportunities to equip the humanitarian sector with the tools necessary to navigate these challenges. The appointee will be encouraged to use this position as an avenue to develop as an independent researcher.

The position is funded through the support of the Humanitarian Action Programme, a joint project of Cambridge University and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation for Cyberspace in Luxembourg.

Applicants must have been awarded a PhD or submitted their doctoral thesis at the point of application in a relevant specialist area, including but not limited to Politics, Digital Media Studies, Cybersecurity, International Relations, or Law, and have relevant demonstrable experience in the fields of humanitarian organisations, international or human rights law, or cybersecurity through either work or field experience.

The Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy (MCTD) works to ensure that digital technologies work for people, societies and the planet. MCTD is hosted within CRASSH and is supported by the Minderoo Foundation.

Fixed term: the funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance. Working arrangements in terms of in-office or from home can be discussed.

Start date is from 1 July 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
